What are Year 4 learning about this year?
Autumn Term (I)
Meet the Greeks!
Join the children as they travel back in time to learn about the ancient Greeks! During this exciting period of European history, the children will find out who the Ancient Greeks were and when they lived. Throughout their learning, the children will explore what daily life was like for citizens living during this period of time, as well as learning about religion, politics (importantly early democracy) and culture through the study of the gods, goddesses, art, architecture. Children will discover the richness of Greek literature through reading and performing myths and legends, including the incredible story of the Trojan War. Alongside this, children will also have the opportunity to work creatively by studying and creating Greek vases in art & design, as well as making links in their maths and science learning. To conclude their learning, children will reflect on and appreciate the impact and influence that this interesting civilisation has had on the world we live in today.

Spring Term (I)
Extreme Earth
In this exciting topic, the children will find out about the world beneath their feet - literally! The children will learn about the earth’s layers, discover how volcanoes are formed and why earthquakes occur, while also investigating where in the world these events take place. Through hands-on exploration, children will re-create a volcanic eruption and test building strength and design against an earthquake in order to understand these incredible forces of nature more deeply. The children will study a variety of natural disasters and develop an awareness of how these events affect people’s lives and livelihoods. With exposure to photos, videos and other media, children will be encouraged to think about what can be done to help and support those who live through these experiences.

Autumn Term (II)
All Roads Lead to Greece
After discovering what Greece was like in the past and developing their historical knowledge, the children will return to the present day and familiarise themselves with modern-day Greece to develop their geographical knowledge. Throughout this topic, the children will consider whether they would like to visit Greece by learning about and researching the physical geographical features of the country, including location, settlements, population, climate and topography. Children will also explore the human geography of this diverse country, including tasting the food, exploring the language and discovering the tourist attractions on offer, while making their decision about whether they would like to visit or not. Finally, children will step into the shoes of a travel representative to share the wonders and delights that Greece has to offer and persuade holidaymakers to visit!

Stencils & Stitches
‘We are designers!’ Join the children in this exciting and creative topic as they explore textile trends and past fashion! After studying fashion through the ages (and considering what fashion of the future might look like) and immersing the children in this dynamic industry, they will be inspired to create stencils, prints and t-shirt designs based on their knowledge of famous fashion fads and faces. Following the research and development approach to their work, the children will combine stencilling, printing and stitching to create a fashion masterpiece of their own! Children will then choreograph their own fashion show performances to share and celebrate their creativity with their families! Who knows – maybe we will discover the next budding fashion designer to influence the world of fashion across the globe while celebrities line up to ‘strut their stuff’ at film premiers, book launches and award ceremonies wearing the latest ’must-have’ designer name brought to them by a Tirlebrook pupil!
