Girls' Football Festival @ Prestbury St. Mary's - Friday, 6th March 2015

Our Y5 and Y6 girls had the opportunity to participate in a fantastic football competition at Prestbury St. Mary's Primary School, organised by the Cheltenham Sports Network. Megan Townshend was a fantastic captain and she led the squad of eight girls over to Cheltenham to play four schools: Gretton, Bishop's Cleeve, Lakeside and the hosts, Prestbury St. Mary's. Tirlebrook began the tournament brilliantly, winning 3-0 against Gretton with goals from Lucie, Ciara and Ellie. This was followed by a 1-1 draw against Bishop's Cleeve and a 4-1 victory over Lakeside, with goals coming from Lucie, Ciara and Molly, as well as an unfortunate own goal. Tirlebrook ended the tournament against Prestbury St. Mary's, and despite performing really well, were unable to avoid defeat, eventually losing 2-0. The girls played so well and oozed enthusiasm, determination and excellent teamwork. The afternoon was extremely enjoyable, with all players travelling back to school smiling, laughing and feeling really very proud of their performances, not just as individuals on the pitch, but also as a team! All in all, Tirlebrook earned themselves second place in the competition and this was a fantastic achievement. Well done one and all!

Squad: Megan Townshend (captain), Ellie Baker, Charlotte Dare, Molly Johansen, Ciara Moran, Niamh Moran, Eve Sherbourne & Lucie Cummings.

Latest School Games Bands Presentations - Friday, 6th March 2015

It was fantastic to be able to award a further three School Games bands this week to pupils who are consistently demonstrating the values in their attitudes towards PE and school sport. This week saw one band each presented for: Determination, Honesty and Teamwork. Well done Finley, Aaron and Charlie - wear them with pride!

Y5 and Y6 Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Football League Competition - Round 2 - Wednesday, 4th March 2015

Tirlebrook's Y5 and Y6 footballers knew that they had to produce another consistent string of performances in the final round of competition in order to secure the overall league title for 2014-2015. And they did it! Congratulations to the squad for another brilliant performance in the Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Football League at Tewkesbury School, on an afternoon in which they won four matches and drew two. This meant that throughout the course of the league the team had amassed an amazing 54 points from a possible 60, winning ten games out of twelve and drawing the other two, scoring 21 goals in all and conceding just one. Fantastic! Their outstanding performance was matched by their excellent attitude and approach; teamwork and sportsmanship were clearly evident throughout the afternoon. The team represented the school brilliantly and they can be extremely proud of themselves.

Feet First Dance Festival @ Cheltenham Town Hall - Wednesday, 4th March 2015

It was fantastic to have the opportunity to take part once again in the Feet First Dance Festival held at Cheltenham Town Hall. Alongside 15 other performing schools, our Dance Club, led by Coach Jasmine and supported by Mrs. Mills, attended this special event organised by the Cheltenham and North Tewkesbury Sports Network. There was opportunity to rehearse in the morning and then grab a spot of lunch before performing to a large audience of pupils, parents and friends in this iconic venue later in the afternoon. The chosen dance was entitled 'Bindi Bop' and was themed around Indian dancing. The children dressed in vibrant costumes and put on a wonderfully confident display for a small group, with some participants as young as just seven. Well done to them all - it was an amazing and emotional experience and they each represented Tirlebrook School fabulously!

Y3 and Y4 Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Football League Competition - Round 2 - Wednesday, 4th March 2015

Children from Maple and Silver Birch classes represented our school in the second half of the Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Y3 and Y4 Football League held at Tewkesbury School. The children worked together well and demonstrated a positive attitude (one of our core values) throughout the competition. The team won 3 games but lost their final one once more, yet again in a very tightly contested match. Tirlebrook finished the competition in second place overall with an impressive 30 points. Well done to everyone.

Results:

Won 5-0 v. Tredington, Won 3-0 v. Deerhurst, Won 5-0 v. Queen Margaret's, Lost 1-0 v. John Moore

After School Squash Club Begins - Tuesday, 3rd March 2015

Mark Toseland has started his after school squash sessions with children in Years 4, 5 and 6. We are delighted to be able to offer this additional activity in our programme of sports on offer to the children. He is also now coaching the Y6 children on a Tuesday afternoon.

Quick Start to QuickSticks Hockey League - Monday, 2nd March 2015

Our Y5 and Y6 hockey players made a great start in our first-ever hockey competition. Tirlebrook have entered a team into the Quicksticks Hockey League in Cheltenham and are participating alongside 17 other teams from local schools. The competition is being held at a central venue - on the astro-turf facility at Balcarras Secondary School - and all matches are played there on a round-robin basis over a period of three weeks. At the end of the first round, we ended up winning one match (v. Oakwood), drawing two matches (v. St. Gregory's The Great and Bishop's Cleeve) and losing just once in a very closely contested match (v. Glenfall). Miss. Featonby reported that there was fantastic teamwork, determination and a great attitude on display throughout the matches, enabling Lucie, Oisin and Ethan to score great goals in various matches. The team was captained by Ellie and every squad member can be proud of their efforts. Many thanks especially to Miss. Featonby for organising this opportunity and to the parents who came along to support. I wonder how we will get on next week?!

Squad: Ellie, Charlotte, Molly, Oisin, Ethan & Lucie

Cross Country Race 4 - Thursday, 26th February 2015

Tirlebrook made a fantastic start to the second half of the Cross Country season today. It was perfect weather for the race and the children had to face a new challenge - the course was set up in reverse and it was also slightly longer! This included a lengthy and steep hill to climb - it really tested the competitors. Congratulations to everyone who helped the boys to achieve a very successful 25 points, whilst the girls managed an impressive 45. Brilliant! Congratulations especially to Charlie for winning the boys race, but everyone should be proud of their amazing performances. Well done!

                                                         Y4 Tag Rugby Festival - Friday, 13th February 2015

On a typically windswept February afternoon, our Y4 children all had the opportunity to participate in a Tag Rugby Festival organised by Gloucester RFC. The children were split into three teams and competed in a six-team competition. Following various rounds of fixtures, it is fantastic to announce that our three teams finished first, second and joint third out of the six participating teams, overcoming other schools including Ashchurch and Twyning. The previous six weeks had seen the children receiving some specialist coaching from two Gloucester RFC representatives and this obviously paid dividends in the festival. Every participant received a certificate and it was a privilege for these to be handed out by Gloucester RFC first-team regular Rob Cook. This ensured that the afternoon was rounded off in style for starstruck children and teachers alike!

Manchester United v Burnley - Premier League Match - Wednesday, 11th February 2015

What a fantastic opportunity for 32 members of the Tirlebrook School community as we visited Old Trafford, home of arguably the most famous football club in the world, for the Premier League match between Manchester United and Burnley. After a tortuous journey to Manchester, we thoroughly enjoyed taking in the sights, sounds, smells and atmosphere of an elite football match, alongside 70,000 others. One of the gang even got up close and personal with the friendly Greater Manchester police! For many, it will be the only time that they visit Old Trafford in their lives, and we hope that it will be an experience that always stays with them. Millions of pounds worth of talent was on display including Wayne Rooney, Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao, Robin Van Persie, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and David De Gea, to name just a few. Following Manchester United's 3-1 victory, which we saw in its entirety from our magnificent seats in the East Stand, the long and arduous journey home began. I finally reached my bed at 2:30 a.m. Oh well, it's back to school in just over four hours!!

Match Updates:
We're here! Fought the traffic and sat down having missed the first two minutes of the game. Amazing seats and an amazing experience. Currently 1-1 (Smalling opened the scoring having come on as an early substitute only for Ings to smash in an equaliser) but it is all Burnley at the moment!

United deliver a sucker punch just before half time. Burnley have been the better team, but it is United who lead 2-1 thanks once more to Chris Smalling. Half time: Manchester United 2 Burnley 1.

Manchester United are comfortable in this second half although they certainly are not at their fluent best. Di Maria has been the stand out performer on the night for United. You can't help but feel sorry for Burnley who have played brilliantly as a whole team!

PENALTY to United. Van Persie knocks it in and surely it is all over now.

FULL TIME - Manchester United 3 Burnley 1. Over and out!

Squash Sessions - Week Five - Monday, 9th February 2015

Ever fancied a game of squash? Well, the Y5 children have! Mark Toseland has been delivering training sessions using his mini squash equipment at school on Monday afternoons. There will soon be an after-school club available. The profile of youth squash has never been higher in Tewkesbury - perhaps this is another opportunity for the latest squash star to be discovered!

Tewkesbury Primary Cricket Academy - Week Three - Friday, 6th February 2015

Some of our Y6 boys are participating in a weekly cricket academy that takes place at Tewkesbury School every Friday after school. Gloucestershire Cricket Board coaches are helping the boys to develop their technique and skills in bowling, batting and fielding, as well as their understanding of the rules and tactics of the game. They have done really well!

Cheltenham & North Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Level 2 Sportshall Athletics Event - Tuesday, 27th January 2015

A team of twelve Y5 and Y6 boys and girls headed over to All Saints' Academy in Cheltenham to participate in the highly anticipated Sportshall Athletics Event 2015. Tirlebrook were up against nine other schools from the Cheltenham and Tewkesbury area in this Level 2 School Games competition. The children had to participate in timed heats in team events such as the 2 x 2-lap relay, the 4 x 1-lap relay and the obstacle relay, as well competing in the field events individually. The field events included standing triple jump, standing long jump, vertical jump, chest push, speed bounce and javelin throw. Every team member contributed in what was a very exciting and enjoyable event. Congratulations to the team as they finished in third place for the second year in a row, securing bronze School Games medals as a reward for their hard work, commitment, teamwork and determination. A fantastic event all round!

Squad: Charlotte Dare, Ashleigh Latter, Molly Johansen, Ellie Baker, Ami Nunn, Effie Birch-Scanlan, Oisin Moseley, Nathan Thomas, Dylan Coxshall, Sam Janes, Sam Mills & Finley Gardiner.

Balanceability Training Begins in EYFS - Tuesday, 27th January 2015

It has been really exciting to see our Reception Class begin their Balanceability training this week. Following a purchase of balance bikes, pedal bikes and other resources with our Sports Premium budget, the children are now readily equipped to improve their general gross motor skills as well as their ability to ride a bike. Many thanks to our community volunteer Joe O'Hara who has come into school on Tuesday mornings to help to implement the scheme. This is yet another fantastic opportunity for our children.

Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Swimming Gala - Wednesday, 21st January 2015

Congratulations to our swimmers who performed brilliantly in the Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Sports Network's Swimming Gala. The team of six each competed individually in one of the following events: Front Crawl (2 lengths), Backstroke (2 lengths), Breaststroke (2 lengths), Stylish Dive, Smallest Splash and Biggest Splash. They then combined to compete in the Canon and Freestyle Relays. Our team competed superbly and were without doubt the most supportive team to their fellow teammates from poolside. The competition was hot, with many club swimmers participating, but even so, places in the finals (top 4) were secured in front crawl and breaststroke, whilst the team finished third in the Freestyle Relay and fourth in the Canon. Overall, Tirlebrook finished in fourth place out of 8 with 41 points, a mere three points behind the third-placed school. Congratulations - you were all brilliant!

Team: Christopher Ballinger, Libby Guthrie, Harriet Bethel, Margot Messenger, Abbie Dallman and Molly Johansen.

It's a New Year - Young Sports Leaders Lead Playground Zoning - January 2015

The Tirlebrook Y6 Young Sports Leaders have kicked off the New Year in style by leading during some of our playground zoning activities at lunch time. Each Young Sports Leader has the opportunity every week to lead an activity or game with both KS1 and KS2 children as part of their new role. They are organised by rota so that their responsibilities fall on different days and across a wide range of activities and children. Thanks to Miss. Featonby, Mrs. Assheton and Mrs. Gosden for their support in this new venture.

Young Sports Leaders Awarded Following Training - December 2014

Tirlebrook has a new group of Y6 children who have been fully trained as Young Sports Leaders. We were delighted to welcome Matt Coldrey from the Cheltenham and North Tewkesbury Sports Network to present them with their badges and certificates. Matt has worked tirelessly alongside Miss. Featonby to enable the children to have this opportunity to lead in sports and at playtimes.

Well done to our twelve successful candidates: Aaron Lund, Ellie Baker, Ethan Whybrow, Megan Townshend, Alex Oliver, Erin Hunt, Oisin Moseley, Margot Messenger, Sam Mills, Liberty Guthrie, Charlie Kendrick & Eve Sherbourne.

Y5 and Y6 Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Football League Competition - Round 1 - Tuesday, 25th November 2014

Tirlebrook's Y5 and Y6 footballers have made a fantastic start to the league season winning all six of their matches in the first round of the Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Football League at Tewkesbury School, scoring 13 goals and conceding none. Their outstanding performance was matched by their excellent attitude and approach; teamwork and sportsmanship were clearly evident throughout the afternoon. The team represented the school brilliantly and they can be extremely proud of themselves.

Results:

Won 1-0 v. Carrant Brook (C. Kendrick), Won 3-0 v. Tredington (S. Janes, S.Fox, B. Radbourne), Won 1-0 v. Tewkesbury C. of E. (C. Kendrick), Won 2-0 v. Twyning (C. Kendrick x2), Won 2-0 v. Mitton (B. Radbourne, S. Fox), Won 4-0 v. Queen Margaret's (S. Janes x2, C. Kendrick (pen), F. Gardiner)

These results have left Tirlebrook on a perfect score of 30 points at the end of Round 1 and full of hope that we can secure the league title in Round 2 in the Spring Term 2015. Well done everyone!

Squad: Charlie Kendrick (captain), Finley Gardiner, Alex Oliver, Tom Prosser, Saul Fox, Sam Janes, Ellis Luker & Ben Radbourne.

Children from Year 3 and 4 represented our school in a football tournament at Tewkesbury School. The children worked well as a team and were disciplined and organised about their performances. Tirlebrook lie second with the second half of the competition to be played later in the academic year.

Squad: Danny Etheridge (captain), Alfie, Fraser Matharu, Jonathan Peirce, Caius Roberts, Elliot Thomas, Peyton Bunce, Oscar Guthrie, Luke Sherbourne, Lilia Teasdale & Callum Trust.

Running Club Continues - Tuesday, 25th November 2014 - The Coldest Day Of The Year So Far ...

There was an excellent turnout at Running Club this morning, despite the hard frost and the chilly air. At temperatures hovering around zero degrees, 25 Key Stage 2 children took to the school field along with Mr. Tomkins at 8 a.m. to complete some running drills and relay activities along to the latest pop soundtrack. This was followed by the usual long-distance run as the children look to complete their individual virtual distance challenges. It was great to see the commitment and fun. Congratulations must also be made to Ellie Baker (Y6) and Jonathan Peirce (Y4) as they are the first two children to have completed their virtual half marathon. Well done!

ESFA 7-a-Side Football Competition - Tuesday, 18th November 2014

Our Y6 footballers entered the local round of the ESFA 7-a-Side Football Competition and played extremely well. In a very closely contested competition, Tirlebrook finished in joint third place out of five schools altogether, winning once, drawing twice and losing just the once. It was a surprisingly warm afternoon and several parents and families turned out to support the team. The competition began with a victory in the first match - a 1-0 win against Tewkesbury C. of E. This was followed by a 2-2 draw with Carrant Brook after conceding a goal very late in the game. The team put aside their disappointment and battled well against eventual winners John Moore. This game saw some heroic defending as John Moore dominated possession and chances. A goal was conceded ... but only just! The referee rightly adjudged the ball to have crossed the goal line to give John Moore a deserved lead. However, Tirlebrook still found time to create chances and as the game went on the balance of play shifted. It was unfortunate that an effort from Oisin hit the underside of the crossbar ... but did not cross the line! The game ended 1-0. The final match in the competition was finely balanced, and having taken the lead against Mitton, the team conceded once more late on in the game as it ended 1-1. Everyone can be pleased with their performance and attitude. It was a good team effort and captain Charlie Kendrick did a great job. Well done!

Squad: Charlie Kendrick (captain), Christopher Ballinger, Dylan Coxshall, Finley Gardiner, Aaron Lund, Sam Mills, Oisin Moseley, Alex Oliver, Tom Prosser & Ethan Whybrow.

Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Netball League Round 2 - Tuesday, 4th November 2014

After a very successful first round of the netball league in early October, the squad returned to the competition eager to perform to the very best of their ability and continue their good early season form. The first of three matches on the night saw Tirlebrook defeat John Moore by the healthy scoreline of 8-0. Great team play was rewarded as Lucie and Erin converted the chances that were created for them to score. This was followed by a challenging match against eventual league runners-up Carrant Brook. The team acquitted themselves well, and although they went down by 6 goals to 3, their determination and effort was outstanding. The final match saw Tirlebrook beat Queen Margaret's 4-2. The team finished in third position out of nine schools overall and should be extremely happy with their progress. Congratulations to overall winners Twyning and many thanks to Tewkesbury School for organising and hosting the league. Well done also to Miss. Featonby for the amount of time and effort she has put into developing the netball team.

Squad: Erin Hunt (captain), Charlotte Dare, Molly Johansen, Margot Messenger, Lucie Cummings, Dylan Coxshall, Christopher Ballinger, Ethan Whybrow.

Running Club Continues - Tuesday, 4th November 2014

The cold weather and damp ground did not put our Key Stage 2 pupils off from making an exhilarating start to the day as Running Club kicked off again after half term. Following some games and drills on the field, the children continued their long-distance running. They are currently working towards one of three goals: a) completing their 10000 metres by virtually visiting other primary schools in the local area; b) completing their half marathon route by running to Cheltenham and back with plenty of virtual stops along the way; and c) completing their whole marathon as part of a virtual London Marathon. It is really excited to see the children enthused about running. Many thanks to Mr. Tomkins for his efforts in establishing our Running Club and well done to all the children involved. Keep running!

Inter-House Cross Country Competition Round 1 - Thursday, 24th October 2014

Years 5 and 6 competed in the first round of this year's Inter-House Cross Country Championships on the final afternoon of the half term. The event was hosted at Tewkesbury School and our Year 3 and Year 4 Sports Council representatives (Fraser Matharu, Grace Baker, Luke Sherbourne and Ava Baker) helped to officiate the race. All children participated with great enthusiasm and team spirit, even though it was quite a challenge for some. Every competitor earned points for their House team which will be collated alongside the results from races 2, 3 and 4, before the winning team is announced later in the year. Well done everyone!

NSPCC Super Circuits Challenge - Tuesday, 21st October 2014

The whole school took part in a sporting event to raise money for the NSPCC after a visit from Buddy. The KS2 children took part in a Super Circuits Challenge in pairs involving 15 stations such as ball bounce, ladder run, sit ups, bench press, skipping and step ups. Each station activity lasted for one minute; the children had to work at high intensity throughout this time whilst their partner counted the number of repetitions. It was a great fun event for both teachers and pupils ... and of course, all for a great cause!

Netball Friendlies v Queen Margaret's Primary School - Monday, 20th October 2014

Our netball after-school club visited Tewkesbury School to play a round-robin against two teams from Queen Margaret's Primary in friendly netball matches. The results were as follows:

Tirlebrook team 1 vs. QM team 1  (2-1)
Tirlebrook team 2 vs. QM team 2  (0-0)
Tirlebrook team 1 vs. QM team 2  (2-1)
Tirlebrook team 2 vs. QM team 1  (5-1)

The matches were played in the right spirit and there was a friendly atmosphere between all of the children. Indeed, two of our children even  played for the opposition when required. Overall, it was great fun and excellent practice leading up to round two of the netball league. And ... fantastic scores for Tirlebrook! Well done to all!

Netball Club: Harriet Bethel, Lucie Cummings, Ria Nuttall, Rosie Hiorns, Georgia Vallender, Esme Smith, Christopher Ballinger, Erin Hunt, Charlotte Dare, Ciara Moran, Niamh Moran, Margot Messenger, Oisin Moseley, Molly Johansen, Dylan Coxshall and Ethan Whybrow.

The Albert Dix Memorial Tournament @ All Saints Academy - Friday, 17th October 2014

It was fantastic to have the opportunity to enter the Albert Dix Memorial Tournament at the All Saints Academy on Friday. This tournament is played annually amongst the schools of Cheltenham and it was great that we were invited to join in. We played three games in all, winning twice and losing once. In the opening game, we fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Gardner's Lane Primary School, before returning with a 3-1 win against Hester's Way, with all three goals being scored by captain Charlie Kendrick. This was followed by a 5-0 victory against The Ridge Academy, goals being scored by Christopher Ballinger, Finley Gardiner, Oisin Moseley, Charlie Kendrick and Aaron Lund. In this section of the competition, we finished in second place overall and therefore do not qualify for the next round. However, it was a great experience and the team equipped themselves well, both in terms of performance and attitude. Well done to everyone!

Squad: Charlie Kendrick (captain), Finley Gardiner, Sam Mills, Christopher Ballinger, Tom Prosser, Dylan Coxshall, Ethan Whybrow, Oisin Moseley, Alex Oliver & Aaron Lund.

Tewkesbury District Cross Country Race 3 - Thursday, 16th October 2014

The final race of the Autumn season of Cross Country races was a very successful one for our school. In cooler but still rather humid conditions, the team were determined to put in a strong performance. The girls went off first and did a great job. Performances of note include Olivia Gardiner finishing in second place in only her third ever race and Ellie Baker finishing third. Charlie Kendrick returned to winning ways, crossing the line in first place in a highly competitive race. Tom Prosser was thrilled with his fourth place finish. The boys race had only just finished when the heavens opened for torrential rain the like of which had never been seen before! Needless to say, we all got soaked! Every runner can be proud of their performances and there were some excellent personal bests. Well done to everyone!

Team: Caius Roberts, Jonathan Peirce, William Haslum, Ben Radbourne, Ellis Luker, Sam Janes, Ethan Whybrow, Charlie Kendrick, Finley Gardiner, Sam Mills, Christopher Ballinger, Tom Prosser, Lauren Booth, Olivia Gardiner, Jemima Dinning, Lucie Cummings, Effie Birch-Scanlan, Ashleigh Latter, Molly Johansen, Ellie Baker, Eve Sherbourne, Ciara Moran and Niamh Moran.

Running Club in the Rain! - Tuesday, 14th October 2014

A really wet spell of weather has not deterred our running club members! Despite the heavy downpours, there has been a fantastic turnout every week. This week, Mr. Tomkins set up an indoor circuit for the children to complete and it was great fun. They then went outside and completed their long distance run. Great effort everyone!

Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Netball League Round 1 - Tuesday, 7th October 2014

Congratulations to everyone on a FANTASTIC performance from all of our netball team during Round 1 of the Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Netball League 2014. We ended Round 1 in third position in the league of nine, following two losses (against Twyning and Deerhurst), one draw (against Hopelands) and two brilliant wins (against Mitton and Tewkesbury C. of E.). The children showed fantastic drive, determination and teamwork and they were extremely proud of their achievements. We can now look forward to Round 2 of the league, where the team will be determined to perform just as well!

Squad: Charlotte Dare (captain), Dylan Coxshall, Niamh Moran, Erin Hunt, Christopher Ballinger, Ethan Whybrow, Molly Johansen, Margot Messenger, Ciara Moran & Lucie Cummings.

Tewkesbury District Cross Country Race 2 - Thursday, 2nd October 2014

Well done once more to our cross country runners who completed race two in much more challenging warmer conditions. The boys went off first at a blistering pace and following a tough race, several made improvements on the previous week's result. The most notable was Sam Janes, who improved by 26 places to finish 76th. There were over 120 boys competing. The girls followed on and seven of them managed to finish inside the top 50. The effort and determination by all should be commended. Well done!

Team: Caius Roberts, Jonathan Peirce, William Haslum, Ben Radbourne, Sam Janes, Ethan Whybrow, Charlie Kendrick, Finley Gardiner, Sam Mills, Christopher Ballinger, Tom Prosser, Oisin Moseley,  Lauren Booth, Olivia Gardiner, Jemima Dinning, Georgia Vallender, Lucie Cummings, Effie Birch-Scanlan, Ashleigh Latter, Molly Johansen, Ellie Baker, Ciara Moran and Niamh Moran.

World Marathon Challenge - Monday, 29th September 2014

Key Stage Two took part in the Eveque World Marathon Challenge. Each child represented their house in a 25 x 200 metre relay race (that's 5000 metres altogether!). There was a Y3/Y4 race and a Y5/Y6 race, from which the results were combined to find a winner in this first Inter-House competition of the year. Hastings won the Y5/Y6 race, followed closely by Beauchamp, Wenlock and then Montague. The winners of the Y3/Y4 race were Wenlock, followed by Hastings, Montague and then Beauchamp. After combining the two sets of results together, Hastings were confirmed as the overall winners. Well done! Seventeen children from Elder Class also competed together to try to record their fastest collective time, the results of which have been submitted onto the World Marathon Challenge website. A time of 16 minutes and 59 seconds earned joint 13th place on the national leader board. Well done to everyone for participating and to the House Captains and several other Y6 children for showing great leadership skills

Tewkesbury District Cross Country Race 1 - Thursday, 25th September 2014

It was fantastic to see 25 children representing the school in the first round of the academic year of cross country races in Tewkesbury. There was a good turnout from the local schools, with over 115 boys competing and more than 80 girls. The girls race started proceedings, and in a very tightly contested finish in the home straight, Ellie Baker secured second place. Many girls were competing for the first time, and although the race was long and hard, they equipped themselves marvellously. The boys race was just as close as last year's champion, Charlie Kendrick, found himself in a home-straight battle for the win. He emerged victorious and was followed by a string of very tired but extremely proud boys. Well done team - we are all really impressed by your attitude, application and spirit. Congratulations!

Team: Effie Birch-Scanlan, Molly Johansen, Ellie Baker, Ciara Moran, Niamh Moran, Jemima Dinning, Eve Sherbourne, Georgia Vallender, Ashleigh Latter, Olivia Gardiner, Lauren Booth, Lucie Cummings, Caius Roberts, Oisin Moseley, Charlie Kendrick, Tom Prosser, Sam Mills, Ethan Whybrow, Finley Gardiner, Christopher Ballinger, Ben Radbourne, Ellis Luker, William Haslum, Sam Janes and Jonathan Peirce.

Running Club Continues - Tuesday, 23rd September 2014

Despite the early morning fog, over 30 children came to school early to continue with Running Club. It was great to see so much enthusiasm and effort at that time in the morning. Keep it up everyone!

Paddle Power-ing for Charity - Bell Boating for the Levana Hanson Trust - Friday, 19th September 2014

Fifteen Y6 pupils and three members of staff took part in the Paddle Power Boat Race at Croft Farm Water Park in aid of the Levana Hanson Trust. Donning suitable safety equipment, they took to the water in KataKanus in teams of six and completed one practice race before competing in the final. All three teams put in lots of effort and paddled hard, but could not challenge for victory due to some slight directional issues! However, it was great fun, a chance to get wet and, most importantly, an opportunity for us to show our support to Tewkesbury School and the wider community by participating in this event. We hope that the money raised goes a long way to enabling Levana to achieve her sporting dreams by being able to purchase a pair of prosthetic running blades. Well done to everyone who took part at the event.

And They're Off! Running Club Begins - Tuesday, 16th September 2014

It was really exciting to see 35 Key Stage 2 children arrive at school at 8 a.m. for Running Club, ensuring an energetic and invigorating start to the day - for both staff and children! Mr. Tomkins led a warm up before the children joined in with a series of small running games, including shuttle runs with hoops, spots and running ladders. They then began their long distance running, with some children managing to run 2000 metres before school! Each child is on a quest. For the beginners, a virtual tour of the local primary school's is the challenge, with children receiving certificates when they have run distances to different schools. For those continuing from last year, the challenge is now to complete a half marathon, with many milestones along the way. Long may Running Club be a success!

Congratulations to Danny (first) and Ella (third) for their winning entries in the 'Day in the Life of a Pair of Trainers' School Games blog competition. The children received some excellent prizes and school games gold and bronze medals. Well done to all the children who entered and to Danny and Ella in particular. We hope that their success will inspire others to get involved in the next set of curriculum competitions.

School Games Values Bands Presentation - Thursday, 10th July 2014

In a special assembly towards the end of term, we presented our final School Games Values Bands of the year. It was great to recognise the children who have consistently displayed the values of Teamwork, Honesty, Determination, Self Belief, Respect and Passion so consistently throughout the year. The children were pleased to receive their bands and we hope that they will continue to wear them proudly. Well done everyone!

Cheltenham and North Tewkesbury EYFS Multi Skills Festival @ Cheltenham College - Thursday, 10th July 2014

On Thursday, our Reception children participated in a Multi Skills Festival held at Cheltenham College. The children participated in a range of multi skills activities, including target roll, a variety of balance activities, the bean-bag 'steal' game, throwing various sporting items, travelling and moving in different ways and jumping. There was a visit from Old Spot, the Gloucestershire School Games mascot. Six children were awarded certificates for each demonstrating one of the School Games Values. Two-hours of fun and great sporting activity flew by and the children had a wonderful time. Many thanks to the Cheltenham Sports Network for hosting the event and to the many secondary school pupils who volunteered to help to run the event.

Y5 Watersports Afternoon @ Aztec Watersports Centre, Upton Warren - Tuesday, 8th July 2014

The Y5 children had the opportunity to return to Upton Warren on Tuesday to 'complete' their residential. Earlier in the term, the children stayed overnight under canvas as part of their watersports experience. Unfortunately, due to the presence of blue-green algae in the lake, the watersports could not go ahead. Miss. Featonby and Alistair from Aztec negotiated a special deal for the children to return once the blue-green algae had dispersed to complete some watersports. So, on Tuesday, the Y5s finally got to go open canoeing and sailing. It was a great afternoon and the children picked up the necessary skills quickly. It was fantastic to see the children sailing around the lake in pairs and picking up a very difficult sport so adeptly. Indeed, the instructors were very pleased with both the behaviour and the skills of the children. Well done to everyone for the great team spirit and positive attitude on display, including the staff (Miss. Featonby, Mr. Lockley, Mr. Jarvie, Mrs. Assheton and Mrs. Gosden) who managed to get quite wet too!

Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Rounders Tournament @ Tewkesbury School - Thursday, 3rd July 2014

Our Y5 rounders team participated in the Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Rounders Tournament at Tewkesbury School. The squad performed excellently in their four matches, showing great sportsmanship and commitment to the cause. In four matches, the team won twice and lost twice, but the two losses were particularly close and they took defeat well. The children were without their more experienced Y6 counterparts as they were enjoying their week away on residential. The attitude on display was superb and this was commented on favourably by other schools and parents, both those supporting our own team and those who were supporting other schools. Well done to everyone who took part - we are very proud of you!

Squad: Ethan Whybrow (captain), Ellie Baker, Molly Johansen, Finley Gardiner, Erin Hunt, Christopher Ballinger, Oisin Moseley, Charlie Kendrick, Tom Prosser, Sam Mills, Dylan Coxshall, Eve Sherbourne, Alex Oliver

Cheltenham and North Tewkesbury KS1 Multi Skills Festival @ Cheltenham College - Thursday, 3rd July 2014

On Thursday, our Y1 children participated in a Multi Skills Festival held at Cheltenham College. There were several schools represented from Cheltenham and we were the only representatives from Tewkesbury. The children participated in the skills activities with children from other schools as they were split up into mixed groups. It was a great opportunity to meet new children and staff from across the Cheltenham area. The multi skills activities included under and over relays, crab walking, ball games (including running to and from hoops, changing direction quickly and carrying objects), shuttle runs and rolling balls to hit a target. There was even a visit from Old Spot, the Gloucestershire School Games mascot. Two-hours of fun and great sporting activity flew by and the children had a wonderful time. Many thanks to the Cheltenham Sports Network for hosting the event and to the many secondary school pupils who volunteered to help to run the event.

Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Kwik Cricket Festival @ Twyning Cricket Club - Tuesday, 1st July 2014

Our Y5 cricketers spent a lovely afternoon in the sunshine at Twyning Cricket Club this week. They looked fantastic in their cricket whites as they played against four other local schools. Captained excellently by Finley Gardiner, they won two matches and lost two others which meant that the team finished in third position overall. The team did particularly well considering this was the first competition that they had played without any Y6 involvement (the Y6 children were enjoying their week away on residential). Very well done to the whole team and many thanks to Mrs. Mills and Mrs. Assheton for their support. Thanks too to all the parents who came along to watch and support.

Team: Finley Gardiner (captain), Christopher Ballinger, Dylan Coxshall, Samuel Mills, Oisin Moseley, Alex Oliver, Nathan Thomas and Ethan Whybrow.

Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Tri-Golf Festival @ Sherdons Golf Centre - Wednesday, 25th June 2014

On Wednesday, ten children from Year 6 had the opportunity to represent the school at the Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Tri Golf Festival at Sherdons Golf Centre. The children competed in ten different games such as 'Chip It In!', 'Bullseye', 'Longest Drive' and 'Target Putt' to name just a few. The event was non-competitive between schools, but points were awarded as the children completed the games. Well done to all of the children: Tom Brookes, James Latimer, Courtney Beckett, Reece Oliver, Milly Smith, Abigail Surman-Daun, Izzy Cooper, Tegan Griffiths, Savannah Matharu and Jolie Morris. Many thanks to Sherdons and to Tewkesbury School for organising this wonderful event, and to Mrs. Assheton and Mrs. Gosden for accompanying the team.

England v Costa Rica Match - Tuesday, 24th June 2014

Despite England's defeats in this year's World Cup against both Italy and Uruguay, the KS2 children still turned out in force to support the team in their game against Costa Rica. There was face painting and bunting and hot dogs for some and everyone really entered the spirit of the event. Despite a relatively uneventful 0-0 draw, the children enjoyed themselves and a football match of their own in the half-time break.

Y3 and Y4 Bell Boating @ Croft Farm - Monday, 23rd June 2014

The Y3 and Y4 children were invited to participate in a session of Bell Boating on the River Avon. 30 children signed up and made their way to Croft Farm after school on Monday. Once there, they put on buoyancy aids and quickly embarked on of two Bell Boats, expertly helmed by former Tirlebrook Headteacher Pete Goodger and his close friend Steve. The children were joined by some of their parents and Mr. Tomkins was kind enough to participate in both sessions. The children learnt to row in rhythm and had a short race along the river. Great fun was had by all!

School Games Week / Health and Wellbeing Week Ends with a Spectacular Sports Day - Friday, 20th June 2014

It was really exciting to hold our annual Community Sports Day on Friday, 20th June. The entire day was devoted to competitive and non-competitive sporting activities and it was a wonderful way to round off our School Games Week. Parents and families were invited to join in the fun and shared in a school community lunch on the field at midday. Infants and Juniors competed separately throughout the course of the day. The Infants completed their races in the morning, with Montague House ending up as winners. Whilst this was happening, the Juniors completed 8 non-competitive games, but still scored points for their House Team. The games included ‘Pointless Parachute’, ‘The Water Relay’, ‘Penalty Shoot Out’, ‘Beach Volley Ball’, ‘The Hula Hula Challenge’, to name but a few. In the afternoon, the Infants took part in their games whilst the Junior children completed their races. Sprints were quickly followed by hurdles and then an unusual caterpillar race where the children had to collect a new member from their team and make their ‘caterpillar’ longer each time they sprinted down the track. The event culminated in the medley relays, including traditional Sports Day ‘legs’ such as ‘Egg and Spoon’, ‘Sack’ and ‘Skipping’. At the conclusion of the event, the whole school gathered for the presentations. It was announced that Wenlock House had retained the trophy, but all of the children were celebrating a fantastic day and a wonderful School Games Week.

County Kwik Cricket Finals @ Cheltenham College - Friday, 20th June 2014

It was a glorious day for the School Games Level 3 County Kwik Cricket finals at Cheltenham College on Friday 20th June. The pitches were well laid out and the sports leaders who umpired and scored were fantastic. There were some superb cricketing skills on show and our team competed against other winning schools from across the county. The team played three games, winning one and losing two (one quite narrowly). The team really supported and encouraged each other and showed real perseverance against some strong bowling and batting. Very well done to the whole team, and to team captain Charlie Etheridge in particular. Thanks must also go to the parents who came along to watch and to support.

Team: Charlie Etheridge (captain), Louis Corless, William Gosden, Joel Hughes, Christopher Ballinger, Oisin Moseley, Ethan Whybrow and Alex Oliver.

School Games Values Bands Presentation - Friday, 20th June 2014

On Friday, 20th June as part of our weekly celebration assembly, a number of children were presented with School Games Values bands. These are in recognition of pupils who have consistently displayed the School Games values in school. Several children were receiving their first School Games Values band and it was a proud moment. Congratulations in particular to Jack Pates and Louis Corless who have now earned three bands each. These bands are worn as part of our school uniform and have become extremely sought after. The values of Respect, Self-Belief, Determination, Honesty, Teamwork and Passion have a high profile in school and it has been great to see the children demonstrating them during our School Games Week. Well done to all!

Tewkesbury Primary Schools Athletics Championship - Track Finals Evening - Thursday, 19th June 2014

On Thursday 19th June, our team of Y3 to Y6 pupils took part in the track evening of the Tewkesbury Primary Schools Athletics Championships. This event, which had been rearranged from the previous week due to poor weather, is always the highlight of the sporting season for schools in Tewkesbury. Races included the 50m sprint for Years 3 and 4, 75m for Y5 and 100m for Y6, as well as longer sprints (200m for girls and 400m for boys), the 1000m long distance race and the 50m hurdles. The event culminated in the relays including the 4 x 50m shuttle relays for Years 3 and 4 and the 4 x 100m baton relays for Years 5 and 6. When all of the race results were added to the field events competition results from roughly one month ago, Tirlebrook finished in a highly commendable third place. Every competitor can be proud of their achievements and as always, the team spirit and support was excellent. Many congratulations to every pupil. Go Team Tirlebrook!

Old Spot, the Gloucestershire School Games Mascot!

Old Spot, the Gloucestershire School Games mascot, made a surprise appearance at school on two occasions during our Health and Wellbeing / School Games Week. Children and staff were delighted to see him and he thoroughly enjoyed meeting the Tirlebrook Primary School community. Old Spot was designed as part of a School Games competition by a pupil from a Gloucestershire Primary School. Anna Bowes, one of our Y6 pupils, was highly commended in the competition and has earned herself an invitation to the School Games Ceremony at Gloucester Cathedral. Thank you for visiting us Old Spot!

Zumba - Health and Wellbeing Week - Thursday, 19th June 2014

It was fantastic to welcome Kirsty McLaren into school to get the whole school Zumba-ing! The children and staff entered into the fun and fitness with enthusiasm and it was great to see so many smiling faces dancing away to the uplifting music. Thanks to Kirsty for getting the whole school moving!

Y3/Y4 and Y5/Y6 Inter-House Swimming Gala - Wednesday, 18th June 2014

Our KS2 pupils took part in our inaugural inter-house Swimming Gala at Tewkesbury School's recently refurbished pool. Every junior child in the houses - Beauchamp, Hastings, Montague and Wenlock - had the opportunity to race for their house. The Lower KS2 gala took place in the morning whilst the Upper KS2 event was in the afternoon. The races consisted of lengths of freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke, some float races, some width races and various relays. There were also some fun elements including a treasure hunt (which involved collecting items from below the water and from the surface as quickly as possible), a stylish dive contest, and a largest and smallest splash competition. The atmosphere was electric inside the pool as the houses cheered on their representatives in each race. The noise made was close to deafening and it was great to see the enthusiasm and community spirit on show. It was particularly pleasing to see children from all houses encouraging some of the children who were lagging behind in the races. At the end of the KS2 Gala, Mr. Lockley, Miss. Featonby, Mrs. Gosden, Mrs. Assheton and Coach Boyd all ended up in the water, which the children were absolutely delighted about. Congratulations to Montague who won the event overall, but also to everyone for making it such a great event that is sure to be repeated next year!

Skippy John visits as part of Health and Wellbeing Week / School Games Week - Tuesday, 17th June 2014

Skippy John, of Britain's Got Talent fame, spent the day with us and got the whole school skipping. All the children had workshops with him and enjoyed learning some new techniques and developing their skills. At the end of the day lots of the children took part in a demonstration for the whole school and since then, it's been lovely to see so many of them carrying on practising what they have learned in the playground.

Y3 Tag Rugby League Festival @ The Folly, Cheltenham - Tuesday, 17th June 2014

On Tuesday morning, eleven Y3 pupils participated in the inaugural Cheltenham and North Tewkesbury Schools Sports Network Tag Rugby League Festival. The event took place at The Folly in Cheltenham and was organised with the support of the Gloucestershire All Golds, the county's premier Rugby League team. The children won three of their games, but lost one, meaning that they missed out on a semi-final place by the narrowes of margins - three less tries scored than another team on an equivalent number of points. The children were passionate, skilful and driven to do the best they possibly could on the pitch and will hopefully have the opportunity to compete again in the future. Well done to them and all the staff and parents who supported them!

Squad: Jonathan Peirce, Tom Francis, Danny Etheridge, William Haslum, Hannah Thompson, Alfie Dowding, Olivia Gardiner, Grace Baker, Zac Jones, Caius Roberts and Fraser Matharu.

The Cotswold Athletics Championship - Saturday, 14th June 2014

The Cotswold Athletics Championship is always a fantastic occasion. We enjoyed a variety of events throughout the morning at the Prince of Wales Stadium in Cheltenham. It was terrific for the children to have the opportunity to run on a proper track and compete in a stadium. The loud-speaker system was announcing race after race as the children competed in sprints, long distances, relays, throwing events and the long jump. The races were started by Mr. John Pickles, who was part of the starting team at the Olympics in London 2012. He had started races involving Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis and even Usain Bolt! Some of the races were very exciting and we experienced some individual successes, including Charlie Kendrick's second-placed finish in the Boys' 1000 metres and Abbie Assheton finishing runner-up in the Girls' 200m. Our Y5 Girls' Baton Relay team won their race - it was thrilling to watch. The event also included some unusual events, such as the mixed baton relay and the 4 x 200m baton relay. Every competitior scored points for the team and after adding them all up we finished in 4th place overall. The prizes and certificates were presented on the day by Winter Olympian Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards who was a parent from one of the other competing schools. The supporters were great in the crowd and many parents commented on the wonderful atmosphere and team spirit. Another hugely successful event for Tirlebrook! What an experience!

Gloucestershire Constabulary Crimebeat Community Cup @ All Saints Academy - Friday 13th June 2014

On Friday, our Y5 and Y6 football team participated in a 16 team six-a-side tournament at All Saints Academy in Cheltenham, competing for the Crimebeat Community Cup. The tournament was organised by the Gloucestershire Constabulary and was used to promote some of the important values of football alongside their 'One Game, One Community' campaign. Each school will shortly receive a follow up session during which the 'Racism - Kick It Out!' campaign will be explored further. In the tournament itself, Tirlebrook qualified for the Quarter-Finals as Group B winners, defeating St. Johns 2-1, Glenfall 3-0 and Leckhampton A 4-0. We sadly came unstuck chasing the game in the knockout round, losing 2-0 to Leckhampton B, despite dominating possession and chances, including hitting both the bar and post. Sometimes it seems to go that way! The team put in a great performance on what was a brutally hot afternoon and the team spirit and positive attitude on display was a credit to the children, as always. Indeed, we were selected as runners up in the Fair Play competition, achieving a score of 39 out of a maximum of 40 on offer from the referees and organisers. Congratulations for yet another super performance from our team.

Squad: Jack Pates (captain), Aaron Lund, Louis Corless, Charlie Etheridge, Charlie Kendrick, Joel Hughes, William Gosden, Oisin Moseley

KS1 Football Skills Festival @ Tewkesbury School - Friday 13th June 2014

Our Y1 and Y2 children spent the afternoon at a festival of football. They practised their skills and worked alongside children from many other local schools to develop and improve a range of skills including passing, shooting, dribbling, turning and tackling. It was a very hot afternoon, but extremely enjoyable and lots of the children couldn't wait to tell everyone what a wonderful time they had ... and to demonstrate their skills!

Mini Tennis Competition and Coaching @ Tewkesbury School - Thursday 12th June 2014

Our Y3 and Y4 were invited to participate in a Mini Tennis competition at Tewkesbury School. As we were the only school who entered, the children played a competition amongst themselves as well as having some expert coaching provided. It was a warm evening and the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Thank you to Tewkesbury School for organising the event for us and adapting it so that our pupils could participate.

ASDA Kwik Cricket Local Round @ Tewkesbury Cricket Club - Thursday 12th June 2014

On Thursday, two teams of Y5 and Y6 children participated in the local rounds of the Asda Kwik Cricket competition at Tewkesbury Cricket Club. The children played competitively, but with a great team spirit and attitude. Our two teams each made it to the play-off section of the competition. One team finished in sixth place after narrowly losing to Leckhampton in their play-off match. We are delighted to announce that the other team won the entire competition, beating Swindon Village in a closely fought final. They have qualified for the Level 3 School Games County Finals at Cheltenham College which is a magnificent achievement. There was some excellent cricket on display and we have some exciting prospects amongst our ranks here at Tirlebrook. Well done to all!

Champions: Charlie Etheridge (captain), William Gosden, Jack Pates, Louis Corless, Joel Hughes, Ethan Whybrow, Oisin Moseley, Christopher Ballinger.

Route to the final: beat Bishops Cleeve A and B teams and Leckhampton.

Sixth Place: Alex Oliver (captain), Patrick Green, Jack Dowding, Sam Mills, Bradley Lane, Tom Prosser, Finley Gardiner, Dylan Coxshall.

Tewkesbury District Swimming Gala - Monday 9th June 2014

On Monday a team of six children represented the school at the Tewkesbury District Swimming Gala. They took part in a variety of events including Front Crawl, Freestyle Relay and Smallest Splash. Congratulations to Will Gosden who came third in the Front Crawl final and in the Stylish Dive competition. Jack Pates did extremely well to win the Largest Splash event. Overall, the team finished in 4th position out of nine schools, amassing 47 points. Congratulations to them all. Special thanks to Mrs. Assheton for accompanying the team.

Team: Abbie Assheton, Anna Bowes, Harriet Bethel, William Gosden, Jack Pates, Danny Phipps

Gifted and Talented Generic Sports Sessions

Gifted and talented sessions across a range of generic sporting skills have started at Tewkesbury School with ex-Cheltenham Town captain John Finnigan. The students selected have an overall sporting talent and the sessions have been designed to explore a range of skills that promote good hand eye coordination, agility, sound tactical awareness within competitive situations, aspects of leadership within sport and overall natural ability. The first session focused on SAQ work (ladders, hurdles, etc.), tactical team games and coordination improvement activities. These 90 minute sessions have been planned over a five-week period.

Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Run - Sunday 25th May 2014

Congratulations to our representatives in the Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Run. Nine runners from Year 5 and Year 6 took on the long-distance course and all completed the challenge. Charlie Kendrick crossed the line in first place and he was quickly followed by the other eight competitors - Sam Mills, Jack Dowding, Sophie Butcher, Liberty Guthrie, Ciara Moran, Ellie Baker, Niamh Moran and Eve Sherbourne. They all received medals for participating. It was great to see our runners enjoying the competition and the sunshine. Well done to them all!

Final Golf Coaching Session 5 @ Sherdons Golf Centre, Nr. Tewkesbury - Thursday 22nd May 2014

Thursday 22nd May marked the final golf session for our Y6 pupils at Sherdons Golf Centre. They have really enjoyed learning to play the game and developing their skills over the past five weeks and there are certainly some children with fantastic potential. Thousands of balls must have been hit during these sessions and there has been lots of fun and laughter as well as sporting success. Many thanks to Chris Gillick for sharing his expertise with the Y6 children but especially to club owner Richard Chatham for welcoming us so warmly each week. He has been particularly impressed by the enthusiasm, behaviour and attitude of our pupils, and would have no hesitation in inviting us again. As National Golf Month comes to a conclusion, let's hope that this is not the end of an interest in golf for the children of Elder Class. Who knows, maybe we have the next Rory McIlroy or Annika Sorenstam in our midst! We hope to participate in an upcoming Tri-Golf Festival, but in the meantime, if you get the urge to drive, pitch or putt, then Sherdons welcomes visitors. Indeed, the driving range is open until 9 p.m. on weekdays and group lessons for youngsters take place on a Sunday morning or can be booked by private arrangement.

Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Bell Boating Regatta @ Croft Farm Water Park, Tewkesbury - Wednesday 21st May 2014

Our annual participation in the Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Bell Boating Regatta was fantastic fun! On a beautiful sunny afternoon, two intrepid teams of Year 6s, along with the very brave Mr. Tomkins, Mrs. Assheton, Miss. Featonby and Mrs. Perry took to the waters and took to battle! One of our squads managed to get to the final by winning their qualifying races - a fantastic achievement! Apart from the racing, there was plenty of time for friendship and fun, including a bit of splashing and getting wet. The adults even went on to win their race and brought the famous 'memorial oar' back to school. Well done to all the Y6 children who took part. I hope it is a special memory of your last year in primary school!

Level 3 School Games Tag Rugby County Finals @ Old Cryptians RFC, Gloucester - Monday 19th May 2014

It was a fantastic achievement for our school to qualify for the County Tag Rugby Finals this week. On Monday, Mr. Lockley and Mrs. Gosden took the team to Old Cryptians RFC to compete against the best school teams in Gloucestershire. It was a very warm day and the competition kicked off with having to play three matches in a row. Following a narrow 9-8 defeat to Cheltenham runners-up Charlton Kings (the winning try being scored exactly on the final whistle), the team completed a 7-5 victory over Highnam. This was followed by a physically aggressive game against Elmbridge Juniors and we lost the game 12-8. The matches resumed after a short break, and we went on to draw 6-6 with eventual group winners Churchdown. We also lost narrowly to Bisley (7-6) and Temple Guiting (8-6). Our team can be proud of finishing fifth in the group overall, and despite their brilliant efforts, they didn't quite do well enough to qualify for the semi-finals. After congratulating the group winners, we headed home, stopping off at McDonalds for a well deserved McFlurry!

Congratulations to the entire squad for playing so well in such warm conditions and for not giving up. Mostly, well done for displaying great sportsmanship and being excellent ambassadors for our school once more.

Squad: Joel Hughes (captain), Reece Oliver, Jack Phipps, William Gosden, Louis Corless, Anna Bowes, Abigail Assheton, Jack Pates, Megan Townshend, Charlie Kendrick, Oisin Moseley & Alex Oliver.

Golf Coaching Session 4 @ Sherdons Golf Centre, Nr. Tewkesbury - Thursday 15th May 2014

Golf has continued to be really exciting and enjoyable. Our fourth session began with a quick reminder of stance and grip and was followed by some shot demonstrations. It was great to hear the children using the correct vocabulary, such as 'loft', 'back spin', 'divot' and 'pitch'. Following some further practice, the children split into three teams in a pitching contest. Points were scored for getting the ball off the ground and into a basket some 5 metres away. Points were also scored for hitting the basket or bouncing out. Mrs. Gosden's team won with 90 points, followed by Mr. Lockley's (76 points) and Mrs. Assheton's (54 points). Top individual point scorers included Joel, Abby, Tegan and Paddy who all scored over 20 points each. The winning team were all presented with the confectionary of their choice from the pro shop. We are looking forward to our final week when we can begin to reflect on just how much we have improved and just how much we have achieved.

Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Athletics Field Events Competition - Wednesday 14th May 2014

Well done to the children who represented our school at the Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Large Schools Athletics Field Events competition on Wednesday. Five schools participated in all, so there were 10 entrants into each event. Molly Johansen finished an impressive 4th in the girls' throwing, ably supported by Abbie Assheton who came in 5th place. Ashleigh Latter finished 5th in the girls' long jump and Sophie Butcher came in sixth place. Joel Hughes and Louis Corless (despite injuring himself in his final attempt) both jumped well and finished 4th and 5th respectively in the boys' long jump. Jack Pates did extremely well and nearly won the boys' throwing contest, narrowly missing out on first place. He was ably supported by Oisin Moseley who came in just behind him in joint 3rd. As always, the children represented the school superbly, in attitude, effort and performance. Well done to you all.

Golf Coaching Session 3 @ Sherdons Golf Centre, Nr. Tewkesbury - Thursday 8th May 2014

Today was the third of our golf sessions at Sherdons Golf Centre. Chris, the club professional, once again led the session and revisited how to hold the club as well as reminding the children how to position themselves and stand correctly. The weather was very mixed, with heavy rain falling at times, but this did not matter as we mostly continued beneath the shelter of the driving range. Paddy, Abby, Savannah and Abbie all had the opportunity to play shots out in the open and bravely did so. Well done to everyone who has been so enthusiastic about these sessions, but especially to Paddy, Jolie, Abby and Bradley for winning prizes for their effort, technique and accuracy. We look forward, once more, to next week!

Running Club Gets Running! - Thursday 1st May 2014

It was great to see 18 children from Years 3-6 participating in Mr. Tomkins' Running Club yesterday morning. The children arrived in sports kit at 8 a.m. ready to have an active start to the school day. Mr. Tomkins has set the 'virtual' challenge of running from Tirlebrook to all of the other primary schools in the Tewkesbury area over a number of weeks. The total distance is equivalent to 10,000 metres! Following the first running club, most of the children have already reached the first school on the route, Mitton Manor. Well earned snacks were then consumed before getting ready for class.

Y5 and Y6 Gymnastics Club - Thursday 1st May 2014

It was great to see 9 of our Year 5 and 6 children participating in the first session of our Gymnastics Club, run by our specialist, Mr. Willis. The children were eager to impress and Mr. Willis commented on the level of enthusiasm and ability. We look forward to seeing what they can achieve over the coming weeks.

Golf Coaching Session 2 @ Sherdons Golf Centre, Nr. Tewkesbury - Thursday 1st May 2014

The second of our golf sessions at Sherdons Golf Centre was great. Club owner Richard Chatham led the lesson and the children built on the technique practised the week before. Each child must have hit at least 50 balls throughout the session. It also included a fun competition between the girls and boys to see who could chip the ball into a target net. The boys managed a narrow victory, but there were many shots that were very close. Charlie also managed to snap a target flag in half - he was VERY accurate. Well done to everyone who has been so enthusiastic about theses sessions, but especially to Ella, Jack and Bradley for winning prizes for their effort, technique and accuracy. We look forward to next week!

Welcome to Zumba! - Friday 25th April 2014

Many thanks to Kirsty McLaren for running an after-school Zumba Club for children in Years R to 4. The first session was a huge success as high tempo music was matched with even higher tempo movements. There were a few red faces but the most noticeable thing were the big smiles.

Tirlebrook 1 v 0 The John Moore Primary - Friendly Football - Thursday 24th April 2014

Well done to our footballers who played extremely well in our 1-0 victory against the John Moore Primary School. In what was a very close game, Tirlebrook slightly dominated possession and chances although both teams had good opportunities to score more goals. The game was played in a very good spirit and it was great to see so many parents from both schools coming along to watch. The game was eventually won as Jack Pates played birthday-boy Louis into space in the box and he lashed an accurate shot into the bottom corner. Special thanks to Alex Oliver for coming along and supporting whilst being injured. Well done to everyone for a great performance on a lovely sunny afternoon!

Squad: Jack Pates (captain), Louis Corless, William Gosden, Christopher Ballinger, Finley Gardiner, Charlie Kendrick, Aaron Lund, Sam Mills, Oisin Moseley, Tom Prosser, Ethan Whybrow.

Golf Coaching @ Sherdons Golf Centre, Nr. Tewkesbury - Thursday 24th April 2014

Today Elder Class enjoyed the first of their five coaching sessions at Sherdons Golf Centre. Following some introductions and a safety talk, the children were taken into the 10-bay driving range where club professional Chris Gillick demonstrated some exquisite iron shots. Following some instruction on how to stand, hold and swing the club, the children worked in threes to try to consistently hit the ball. This was met with mixed levels of success, but we hope that over the coming four weeks that the children will really improve and enjoy themselves. Who knows, this may be the beginning of a lifelong love of golf. Well done everyone!

Final Football Coaching Session with John Finnigan - Wednesday 23rd April 2014

Today was the last opportunity for Charlie, Jack, William, Louis and Joel to be coached by ex-Cheltenham Town captain John Finnigan. The boys participated in one final training session and this was followed by a photo opportunity. John gave the boys a signed picture of himself as well as a collage of photos of him throughout his footballing career. It was a fantastic opportunity to be coached by an ex-professional footballer for ten weeks - we know the boys really made the most of it. Well done!

Hockey Coaching Begins for Y2 and Y5 - Tuesday 22nd April 2014

We have been delighted to welcome Emma Graysmark into school to coach our Y2 and Y5 children in hockey. The children started with some basic skills using unihoc sticks including push pass, dribbling and turning. We hope to be able to use some of our new hockey equipment shortly. These sessions will run for six weeks in all. We are grateful to Emma for her enthusiasm and skill.

GCB Indoor Cricket Festival - Wednesday 2nd April 2014

Our cricket team had the chance to prepare for the  upcoming Summer Term and the outdoor version of the game in the Gloucestershire County Cricket Board's Indoor Festival held at Tewkesbury School. The team played three matches, which they all won by scorelines of 47-20, 82-36 and 91-41. There was some high quality bowling and fielding on display and the highest scoring batting pair during the festival was the partnership of Sam and Will who scored 28 runs from two overs. The team also hit the ball out of the playing area on several occasions! It is great to see such enthusiasm for the sport from the children in our school.

Squad: Charlie Etheridge (captain), Louis Corless, Will Gosden, Jack Pates, Christopher Ballinger, Finley Gardiner, Sam Mills, Oisin Moseley, Alex Oliver, Ethan Whybrow.

School Games Panathlon Event - Tuesday 1st April 2014

Congratulations to our team who entered the Cheltenham and North Tewkesbury School Games Panathlon event at Oxstalls in Gloucester. Tegan, Tom and Ella from Year 6 were joined by Jessica and Joshua from Year 4 and Jack from Year 3 to take part in the event and represent our school. We were joined by Ernestas from Mitton who completed our team. Our team was called the 'Lions'. The children participated in a range of activities at various stations in order to gather points throughout the day. The events included boccia, new age curling, tabletop sports, parachute games and football. Everyone had a great time and received a medal and certificate for participating. Thanks to Mrs. Gosden and Mrs. Mills for accompanying the team. Well done everyone!

Football District Cup Bronze Medallists - Tuesday 25th March 2014

Our football team performed valiantly at today's final event of the season, the District Cup. Everyone put in 100% effort and can be proud of their attitude and performance as they progressed through the competition.

In the group stages, the team started brightly with a 6-0 victory against Deerhurst. This was followed by a narrow 1-0 defeat to Tewkesbury C. of E., a game in which Tirlebrook dominated possession and chances. It was settled by a fine strike from one of C. of E.'s few advances on goal. The final game saw Queen Margaret's beaten by a 2-0 scoreline and a semi-final place secured. This followed and it was another very closely contested game, the team narrowly missing out on reaching the final, losing 1-0 when it really could have gone either way. In the bronze medal match, Tirlebrook ran out 5-0 victors against Carrant Brook.

The team could give no more in terms of effort, determination, skill and endeavour and should be proud of their 3rd place finish. There really was nothing to choose between the best three teams this season; it just didn't go for us as we would have liked. Congratulations to the eventual winners, Twyning, and well done to our team - we are proud of you!

Team: Jack Pates (captain), Aaron Lund, Louis Corless, Charlie Etheridge, Charlie Kendrick, Finley Gardiner, Joel Hughes, William Gosden, Oisin Moseley.

County Cross Country Finals - Saturday 22nd March 2014

Congratulations to Y5 pupils Charlie and Ellie who represented the Tewkesbury District at the County Cross Country Finals at St. Edwards School in Cheltenham on Saturday. This Level 3 School Games competition brought together the best runners from across the county, representing 9 districts and over 300 primary schools. Charlie qualified as Tewkesbury's highest-ranked boy competitor whilst Ellie had earned her place by qualifying inside the top ten. The race was 1.19 miles long, but it followed an undulating course, including a sustained ascent of Leckhampton Hill. Charlie battled tenaciously throughout and finished the race in an impressive 28th position, returning home as first Tewkesbury boy. Ellie equally battled hard and crossed the line in an extremely fast girls' race in 79th position. There were over 100 competitors in both races. The calibre and quality of the running on view was extremely high and both Charlie and Ellie can be very proud of their performances. Charlie's first-Tewkesbury-boy-home finish has earned him an invite to the opening ceremony of the Gloucestershire School Games at Gloucester Cathedral as well as a School Games medal. Congratulations to all the runners who represented their respective districts - it was great to see so much talent on show.

Sport Relief - 21st March 2014

The whole school took part in the Sport Relief mile to raise money for this great cause. The children completed laps of the school playground and field that included crawling through tunnels, taking penalty football shots, shooting at netball hoops, skipping, balancing on benches and cycling or scootering around a series of cones. To complete one mile, the children needed to finish four laps. The children ran in houses and supported each other. School councillor Charlie Etheridge organised and planned the event alongside Miss. Featonby and some of the Y5 and Y6 children helped to marshal the course. It was a great opportunity to get active and raise funds at the same time.

Y4/Y5 Tag Rugby Festival - March 2014

Our Y4 and Y5 team played excellently on Thursday in the driving wind and rain in our first Tag Rugby competition of the year. Following a good 5-2 victory against Tewkesbury C. of E., they narrowly lost out to Carrant Brook 5-4. In our final match against Twyning, it was another close affair, the team losing 4-2. This put us into the play-off for fifth and sixth place out of eight teams against Hopelands. A strong performance saw us run out 6-2 winners. The team haven't played together very many times, yet the performance and attitude on display was of a high standard. Well done.

Beauchamp Emerge Victorious in House Netball and Football - March 2014

Our Year 5 and Year 6 children participated in our first House netball and football competitions this week. Tewkesbury School kindly allowed us the use of their All Weather Pitch and netball courts as well as providing umpires and referees to support the tournament. The House Captains split their houses into two teams and each competed separately in both the netball and football competitions. It was great to see the teams supporting and encouraging one another and also for those who have not played either sport very often, to be involved in competing. Both competitions were very close, particularly the football, which in the end went down to goal difference between the top two teams, Beauchamp and Wenlock. Beauchamp emerged victorious in both events but all the houses should be congratulated for their teamwork, passion, determination and respect (four of our six School Games Values). Well done to everyone!

Cross Country Results - March 2014

The cross country season is now over and every child who participated in this year's races can be proud of their results. The aim for every runner is to persevere to complete the gruelling course and to improve their finishing position week by week. Many can look back over the season and say that they have well and truly achieved their aim. As a school, we finished in 5th place in the overall team competition which was a pleasing result. However, we also had some outstanding individual results that equally should be recognised. Congratulations to Charlie Kendrick who won three races out of five this season (the three since Christmas) to finish in first place overall in the boys' competition (out of approximately 130 boys altogether). This is a magnificent achievement. And Ellie Baker finished in ninth place overall in the girls' competition (out of approximately 100 girls altogether) - another marvellous achievement. Both will go on to represent the Tewkesbury District in the upcoming county finals. Well done to everyone for another excellent season of cross country running.

Feet First Dance Festival - 5th March 2014

Mrs. Perry took her Dance Club to participate in the Feet First Dance Festival at Cheltenham Town Hall. It was a terrific experience for our dancers, from Years 4 to 6, as they had the opportunity to perform to a packed audience of adults and children. The children had the chance to practise first and also watched other schools as they performed. Our dance was an energetic and lively piece to Katy Perry's 'Roar!'. Well done to all who were involved.

A brilliant performance!

District Football Champions - Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Year 3 and Year 4 Football League Round 2 - 5th March 2014

Our Y3 and Y4 football team completed the final round of league fixtures without defeat on their way to the title of Tewkesbury District Champions. Four wins and thirteen goals (only two conceded) in this second round of matches saw them win this inaugural league competition.

Captain Ben Radbourne led the team with great enthusiasm and encouragement, whilst always remembering to demonstrate courtesy and sportsmanship to the opposition. It was a great achievement to bring the winners' shield home!

Handball Club - Spring 2014

We have been excited to host a handball club this term. Using our links with the Cheltenham and North Tewkesbury Sports Network, we have employed a coach to introduce this alternative sport to children in Years 4 to 6. As part of our drive to extend and widen opportunities, handball was identified as one of the Olympic sports that our pupils wanted to try out. So far the club has been well received and the game is certainly energetic and exciting.

Further Football Success - Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Year 5 and Year 6 Football League Round 2 - 5th March 2014

The Y5 and Y6 school football team did themselves proud today (5th March). They participated in the second round of the Tewkesbury and District Football League and they came away having won all six matches without conceding a goal. Added to the results before Christmas, the points accrued ensured that we came second in the league overall and we were awarded silver medals. Today's games saw some outstanding individual performances. However, it was the way the team played together and the attitude that they displayed that was most impressive. It was a brilliant afternoon and we are all very proud of them.

Team: J. Pates (captain), A. Lund, L. Corless, C. Etheridge, J. Hughes, C. Kendrick, S. Mills, W. Gosden, O. Moseley and E. Whybrow.

Results: v Deerhurst won 1-0 (J. Hughes); v John Moore won 3-0 (O. Moseley x2, C. Etheridge); v Tewkesbury C. of E. won 1-0 (W. Gosden); v Queen Margaret's won 2-0 (C. Kendrick x2); v Hopelands won 3-0 (J. Pates, J. Hughes x2); v Twyning won 1-0 (J. Hughes).

Well done lads!

Cross Country Continues ... Spring 2014

After a long-lasting bout of dismal weather, and many Cross Country races postponed, the season continued on 27th February. Our pupils raced on the 'alternative course' which is at least half as long again as the original course! The team put in a great performance and they demonstrated a positive attitude throughout. It was great to see our pupils really encouraging one another. Special congratulations to Charlie in Y5 for winning the boys' race - a phenomenal achievement out of 85+ participants. Well done to everyone!

Our Sportshall Athletics team came away with bronze medals from our first Gloucestershire School Games event of the year. In a new competition for the school, our Year 5 and Year 6 children combined to compete in a range of indoor track and field events at All Saints' Academy in Cheltenham. Competing against 8 other schools of similar size, the children participated in relays, obstacle races, sprints and a variety of field events, including soft javelin, speed bounce, standing triple jump and chest push. The team finished in 3rd place overall, scoring an impressive 244 points, 40 more than the 4th placed school and just 18 points behind the overall winners. Congratulations to everyone for demonstrating such a terrific team spirit and positive attitude. Thanks too to Mrs. Assheton, Mrs. Gosden, Miss. Featonby and Mr. Lockley for organising and supervising the event.

Football Coaching with John Finnigan - Spring 2014

Several Tirlebrook pupils have recently started some special football coaching sessions with John Finnigan, ex-Cheltenham Town captain, at Tewkesbury School. They had a great opportunity to demonstrate their skills alongside pupils from other local primary schools. These sessions should help them to develop their skills even further. Well done!

House Cross Country Competition - December 2013

Well done to our Y5 and Y6 pupils for participating in our first intra-school House Cross Country Competition. It was fantastic to see so many children taking on the 1000 metre long course across the grounds of Tewkesbury School. Our House Captains gave brilliant motivational talks before the race and it was great to see so many children encouraging others as they approached the finish. It is planned to have a further race in the Spring Term. Many thanks to Tewkesbury School for allowing us to use their facilities for the race.

Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Netball Tournament - 4th December 2013

Well done to our netballers who put in a great display in the recent Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Netball Tournament. The team played three fixtures in a round-robin group format. The first two matches against Deerhurst and Tewkesbury C.of E. saw our team apply themselves well, demonstrating great teamwork and determination, despite narrow defeat. The final game saw a comprehensive victory against Queen Margaret's and the team finished on a high. As always, our players represented the school well and showed respect and manners towards the opposing teams and officials. We are looking forward to the next round in March.

Squad: Abbie Assheton (captain), Charlotte Dare, William Gosden, Patrick Green, Erin Hunt, Oisin Moseley,

Megan Townshend and Jessica Worrell.

Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Year 3 and Year 4 Football League Round 1 - 26th November 2013

On Tuesday afternoon, the Year 3 and Year 4 football team participated in a new 'mini-league' event at Tewkesbury Secondary School. The children represented the school's values of positive attitude and community perfectly. The team won all of the four games in which they participated, playing with enjoyment and skill. There is a second half to this competition in March and the children will then get the opportunity to enhance and demonstrate their skills further. It was great to see parents supporting the team and we could not have asked for more commitment and team ethic from our players. Well done Team Tirlebrook!

Team: Ben Radbourne (captain), Lucie Cummings, Jack Ellis, Sam Janes, Ellis Luker, Alfie Dowding, Danny Etheridge,

Jessamy Morris and Jonathan Peirce.

Tewkesbury Primary Schools' Year 5 and Year 6 Football League Round 1 - 26th November 2013

Our Year 5 and Year 6 footballers performed excellently in the first round of league fixtures. On a bitterly cold afternoon, the team played seven matches, winning four, drawing one and losing twice. The team conducted themselves excellently, showing a great sporting attitude, as well as determination and desire to succeed. It was a very impressive team performance, especially as a bout of sickness robbed the squad of two players earlier in the day. Well done Team Tirlebrook!

ESFA Local 7-a-side Football Competition - 13th November 2013

Our football team recently finished 3rd in a tightly contested ESFA local competition out of eight schools altogether. Our team displayed a positive attitude, as always, and were a credit to the school. Despite scoring 20 goals and only conceding once, our record of five wins, one draw and one defeat saw us miss out on qualifying for the county finals by just two points.

Results:

v Twyning (Lost 0-1); v Tewkesbury C. of E. (Drew 0-0); v Mitton (Won 1-0); v Tredington (Won 8-0);

v Queen Margaret's (Won 1-0); v The John Moore (Won 2-0); v Deerhurst (Won 8-0).

Captain Jack Pates said, "We should be proud of our achievements. It is disappointing to come so close to winning and not quite make it, but we have to be happy with how we played. I'm proud of the team!"

We are too! Well done for everyone's hard work and effort.

Team: Jack Pates (captain), William Gosden, Louis Corless, Patrick Green, Charlie Etheridge, Joel Hughes,

Year 4 Kwik Cricket Team - Summer 2013

Our Year 4 cricketers went to Newent to participate in a local round of the Gloucestershire Cricket Board Kwik Cricket Competition. The team won all of their matches on their way to the final, and despite losing in the final to Bream C. of E. Primary, they qualified for the county finals at Wycliffe College. Despite the high standard of competition, our team won two matches and were defeated in just one at this county stage. Unfortunately for us, only the first-placed school in each group qualified for the semi-finals and so we narrowly missed out. The team can be extremely proud of their efforts and they have outstanding future potential in the sport. Well done.

Some of our junior children have enjoyed the opportunity of attending Bell Boating sessions at Croft Farm Water Park.
